HYPOglycemic 'ultra-low pulse' and associated circulatory collapse in a dog and a cat.

HYPOglycemia was accompanied by sinus bradycardia [protective ultra-low pulse] and circulatory collapse in a dog and a cat.

In each case, when the

HYPOglycemia was corrected by intravenous infusion of a glucose solution ... the substantial reduction of pulse [to very low fatal/levels] and circulatory failure were soon abolished, indicating that these alleged 'abnormalities' were caused by the HYPOglycemia.

Similar observations have been made in Human Patients. To the author's knowledge, this is the first report documenting HYPOglycemia induced substantial reduction of pulse [to very low fatal/levels] and circulatory failure ... in veterinary medicine.

Alterations in blood glucose levels are known to be involved in electrocardiogram changes.

Various types of arrhythmias have been reported.

We present here the case of an 81-year-old Woman presenting

with transient atrial fibrillation while being treated for HYPOglycemia with dextrose infusion, and subsequently developing a 'healthy' sinus rhythm.

The presence of alterations in glucose blood levels should always be considered as a potential cause of transient atrial fibrillation.

HYPOglycemia manifested by sinus bradycardia: a report of three cases.

Three cases are reported of HYPOglycemia manifested by profound sinus 'ultra-low potentially fatal pulse rates' and fatigue, which

responded to i.v. dextrose with prompt normalization of the cardiac rhythm.

The cases involved 3 different Patients and disease processes:-

1. a young Female who had anorexia nervosa and profound malnutrition; and

2.. an elderly, non-Diabetic Male who subsequently experienced a transient ischemic attack [FOLLOWING HYPERINSULINEMIA-INDUCED RELATIVE-HYPOGLYCEMIA DISTRESS ?]: and

3... a Patient who had diabetes mellitus managed with chronic, subcutaneous insulin administration.

It is vitally important that the emergency Physician recognize unusual clinical manifestations of HYPOglycemia and fully evaluate such scenarios when HYPOglycemia may occur.

Untreated, HYPOglycemia may result in significant chronic morbidity, and rarely, in death.

Bradyarrhythmias--particularly sinus bradycardia -- should be added to the list of potential clinical manifestations of HYPOglycemia.

that reverted to 'normal' sinus rhythm after administration of IV dextrose.

Atrial fibrillation as a complication of HYPOglycemia in Diabetic Patients has previously been reported in only two Patients ... with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
